Jedediah "Jed" Stone is the main antagonist of Alone in the Dark 3. He is the founder of Slaughter Gulch and the one responsible for the uprising of ghosts in the small town and the disappearance of the Hill Century film crew.

Biography[]

Background[]

Jed Stone was raised an orphan in the San Juan Mission under the care of Father Don Fernando, who believed Jed to be the offspring of Elisabeth Jarrett and Pregzt. Jed went missing in 1837, during a fire in the Mission that started under unknown circumstances.

Many years later Jed found himself working as a prospector, when he reached an ancient Mojave burial ground called The Field of Braves. Jed buried his hands in the Mojave graves, where found a golden eagle. Word then spread around and prospectors came from miles around and slaughtered the Natives, and for eleven days they dug the ground. Afterwards, Jed founded the town of Slaughter Gulch over the ancient burial ground. After years of gold digging, Hutchinson came to him and told him about another mineral far more useful and valuable than gold.

Ignoring the possibilities of political intervention, Jed hired convicts and quickly turned the ancient temples in an enormous sewage system. To increase his power, the city's economy and transportation, he built a train station. When the Railroad Company arrived, he built a water tank, so they would see that Slaughter Gulch was a real paradise.

On July 5th, 1865, Jed Stone and his men lynched one of the Company's representatives and a government agent. This event caused a riot within the prospectors, led by Tobias MacCarthy, who chased Jed Stone's gang to the mountains, where they were in hiding. The dynamite thrown by one of the prospectors blew up methane pockets within the mountain, making it collapse over Jed and his henchmen. No survivors were found by the 7th Cavalry. And from that point, Jed Stone was no more.

Events of Alone in the Dark 3[]

Jed Stone appears as the main antagonist in Alone in the Dark 3, as well as the final boss. He's the whole reason for Carnby to be in Slaughter Gulch, since he kidnapped Emily Hartwood. It is revealed that he is finally using the ore to fulfill his plan of starting the Apocalypse by moving the San Andreas Fault, using the radioactive ore he discovered.

He seems to hold a personal grudge for Edward Carnby, although it is not specified whether this is due to Carnby constantly interrupting his plans or if it's because he was responsible for the deaths of his supposed parents in the first two games.

Strategy[]

Carnby finds Jed Stone three times in the game. Once in the water tank, and twice in the Skull Cave.

In the water tank, Carnby cannot hit or reach Jed. At this point, the player must give in Hill Century's money and the key to the suitcase in order to make progress.

Carnby can search an opening in the Spider Cave, right after the Lab. When the window opens, he will see Jed Stone and Emily. Jed will notice and shoot Carnby. Caution is the best option at this moment, because Carnby will lose health points, and if he is low enough on that, it can be fatal. After defeating Cobra and reaching the Skull Cave, Jed will flee.

When you finally reach Jed, he is geared up in a power armor that makes him invincible to bullets and fist fighting, along with the Elwood Brothers. The only way to defeat him is to open the water tap, use the rubber glove and a knife to cut the cable, then head back to the eagle shrine and wait until he steps in the electrified water. His laser shots deal 2/3/5 damage on easy/normal/hard difficulty, respectively. It is also advised to defeat the Elwood Brothers before defeating Jed, since they teleport straight to the shrine to shoot Carnby.

Trivia[]

  • His appearance is based off Abraham Lincoln's, wearing a black suit, a tall top hat and a beard around his face.
  • His death does not leave behind a hellish cat.
  • Jed is the only enemy in the game to die in a pre-rendered cutscene.
