Joseph Edenshaw was the last witch doctor of the Abkani tribe as well as the last of his kind, who were believed to have been extinct. He introduces himself as Shadow Island's guardian.

Background[]

He is the last surviving member of the Abkani tribe. He was befriended by the Mortons, who lived on Shadow Island with him. He becomes friends with Jeremy Morton, Alan and Obed Morton's grandfather, in 1922, and moves into Shadow Island in 1924. Edenshaw worked for Morton's family for many years, becoming more and more close to them, but slowly starts to become worried about Alan's morbid fascination with the World of Darkness. Despite his efforts, Alan grew more and more obsessed with his research, and an irreparable break between the two occurred. The Morton even manipulated the Abkanis to perform a ritual in order to get of the seven tables necessary to destroy the gate to the world of Darkness, even though the ritual would not be truly completed for several years, until a man would come to the island; a man whose future Edenshaw was seeing in his dream: Edward Carnby.

At some point, Edenshaw started to fight the evil ghost of Judas de Certo, and managed to greatly weak him by stealing and hiding de Certo's personal mirror. The Abkanis then remained in Shadow Island, waiting patiently the time when he would have fight to stop Alan and the opening of the gate to the World of the Darkness.

Involvement[]

Aline first meets this mysterious but wise character after she defeats the trickster, Judas de Certo. Edenshaw reveals the woman his identity as the last Abkanis' sorcerer, and asks her help to find seven statuettes necessary to celebrate the ritual that can stop the Darkness in Shadow Island and leaves. Carnby meets Edenshaw in the Manor's First Floor hallway after he meets up with Aline. The Abkanis introduces himself, and then pleases the skeptical Carnby to save them as the legends say. However, he is unable to respond the detective's questions about Charles Fiske, as the indian never met him.

Edenshaw renews his request to Carnby later, when Alan's ritual is imminent, and reveals to Carnby he has come to Shadow Island because of a god's will, and Edenshaw himself dreamed this by a long time. Despite their best efforts, they didn't manage to prevent Alan from opening the gate to the World of Darkness. Hurt by the man while trying to stop Alan, Edenshaw begs Aline to continue the fight, despite the desperate situation. When Carnby and Aline manage to collect all the statuettes, Edenshaw, having seen an helicopter coming to the island, encourage the two to escape before the sun rises, while he can fulfill his destiny thanks to them. While Carnby and Aline escape thanks to Johnson's help, Edenshaw perform the magic ritual, which destroys Shadow Island and the gate to the World of Darkness, appearently sacrifing his life in the process as well.

Personality[]

Edenshaw is a calm and quite man, never raising his voice or losing his composure. Maybe due to his old age, he never shows strong or violent emotions, neither fear or concern for imminent threats. According to Alan, who however despites Edenshaw, he is a proud man, willing to prove his sorcerer's powers, and considering it a weakness he used to manipulate the Abkanis; but in front of Carnby and Aline, he looks to be a humble and hurt man, even implying he knows perfectly his limits due to his age, and asking help to them to fulfill his mission. Even though he is never aggressive towards anyone, Edenshaw is still determined to defend and affirm his mind, if he is sure about it, as he reveals to Carnby the detective has come to Shadow Island not really due to his dear friend's death, but because of a god's will, as he dreamed Carnby's future.

Despite being determined to prevent the Morton to release the Creatures of the Darkness in the world, Edenshaw doesn't actually hate them. Even when he faces Alan, he doesn't show anger or contempt towards him, still he continues to beg the man to not open the gate to the World of the Darkness, as the Morton has no really idea of the consequences of his actions. When he first meets Carnby, Edenshaw actually blames himself and his weakness for what happened in the family, as he lets the young Alan and Obed to play with forces over their understanding, showing he feels responsible for the horrors of Shadow Island.
