Alone in the Dark 1 Remake (canceled)

Gameplay

Alone in the Dark is a cancelled survivor horror video-game project by Eden Games that was planned to be a complete remake of the original Alone in the Dark and a prequel to the 2008 reboot, with a younger Edward Carnby and an art direction more reminiscent of the 2008 reboot.

The remake project was eventually revived by Pieces Interactive after the series' IP was acquired by THQ Nordic, but this time into a complete re-imagination of the original game with an entirely new story instead of a modernization of the first game.

Cancellation[]

Parent company Atari suffered a number of market failures towards the end of Eden Studios' business run, and was forced to lay off a large portion of the staff in 2011 following the release of the team's final game.

The company was kept alive all the way until 2013, when it was finally liquidated, resulting in the immediate cancellation of the game.

Gameplay[]

The game would have had the same theme as the first title, with a much more creepy atmosphere and setting, better and much more realistic graphics, new puzzles, weapons and enemies. It would bring the same gameplay of using menus to interact with certain objects from the first game, but in a much more realistic way; and also a more immersive experience with quick-time events.

The game should have been an upgraded remake of the first Alone in the Dark. The little existing material (developed only for Atari's internal promotion, so still primordial) suggests that there were some differences from the original title, developers said that in their intentions there was the idea of changing some puzzles and concentrating especially on light effects and management.

The game would take place in a completely recreated version of Derceto Manor from the original game with improved graphics and atmosphere, while maintaining the still camera angles and puzzle solving. The game would inherit elements from Alone in the Dark: Inferno, such as combat and the ability to interact with objects in the environment to fight enemies and solve puzzles, and the enemies would be replaced by monsters that looked closer to the art style of the Humanz.

The inventory management and the ability to push objects, like furniture, would return as a game mechanic and quick time events would play a part in evading enemies that would eventually ambush the player and during scripted events as the player progressed through the story.

Trivia[]

• The logo in the demo's title screen was used in the pre-release material of the 2008 reboot of Alone in the Dark.
