Vampirez are a type of enemy in Alone in the Dark relating to the Fissures. Formerly bats, these creatures have become possessed by Lucifer, becoming demonic monsters.

Background

Vampirez are demonic creatures unleashed by Lucifer during his assault upon New York City. Batz are fairly small, though larger then normal bats, approximately the size of a common house cat. They have two large wings, and a giant mouth that they use to attack foes, and to suck blood from the bodies of the dead. Each also carries a tendril which can be used to latch on, and carry various things, ranging from unfortunate victims to vehicles.

Involvement

Vampirez are encountered fairly frequently throughout the park, acting as antagonists for the player. They have a nest established near the center of the park, which the player must destroy to continue.

A massive Vampirez is also seen during the game, and later picks up a subway car with Edward inside. In the Playstation 2 version of the game, this giant Batz is a boss that the player must defeat, though it is much smaller in size, being the size of a van.

Strategy

Vampirez are extremely weak, as a single shot or hit from any weapon is enough to kill them. Like all demonic forces, they are extremely vulnerable to fire, though it is difficult to hit them in this manner. Most of the time however, it is more efficient to simply run past them, as they will only pursue the player a short distance before giving up the chase.

To compensate for their weak nature, Batz frequently travel in packs, making them much more dangerous. When traveling as a group, they are able to lift individuals and vehicles into the air, and are able to hurl heavy objects, such as chunks of stones and cars, at enemies.

Trivia

• The exact nature of the giant Batz is never explained. It can be theorized that this giant creature is, in essence, the queen Batz, as it has the ability to spawn smaller batz (Playstation 2 version). However, this is only a theory, and should be taken as such.

• Surprisingly, Vampirez are much more aggressive and dangerous on the Playstion 2 game, frquently able to kill players within seconds when attacking on mass.

Trivia

• Vampirez are named after vampires; reanimated corpses, inhabited by the spirit of the deceased, that rise at night to stalk and drink the blood of the living.
• Vampirez are inhabited by the spirit of Lucifer. This is reminiscent of the fact that it was believed by many Christians and Catholics that possession by the Devil was the reason vampires rose from death.
