Humanz are recurring enemies in Alone in the Dark (2008), consisting of formerly human beings possessed by the power of Lucifer.

Overview

Background

Originally ordinary humans, humanz are no longer their former selves; having been possessed by demonic forces and turned into feral monsters who will attack anyone on sight. They possess inhuman strength and enhanced mobility as well as an animalistic ferocity and resistance to injury, being able to jump high altitudes and crawl up on walls.

Events of Alone in the Dark (2008)

Humanz are found throughout the entire game since the beginning. They wander around Central Park, either guarding the roots of evil or searching for victims to attack.

Strategy

Like all enemies in the game, Humanz are very vulnerable to fire and explosions. However, they posses a certain tolerance to it that varies depending on the individual. Humanz perish quickly, while larger ones can endure a medium amount of fire, frequently requiring two or three bursts of flame to kill them for good, as long as the fire hits the fissures in their bodies.

An efficient strategy against them is hitting them in the fissures around their bodies with fire using spray cans with the lighter or explosives, which can be useful against multiple humanz at once when Carnby is surrounded. Burning objects are a great alternative to preserve resources, since they last quite a long time on fire and, depending on how long the object is, can help keep the humanz away from Carnby.

If the player is not holding any sprays or explosive bottles in the inventory, they can shoot the fissures running through the humanz bodies with fire bullets. However, this is very difficult, as the fissures are narrow and thin and the humanz have very quick movements, making them difficult to shoot, and the player runs the risk of wasting precious ammo. Because of this, fighting them in this method is not recommended except as a last resort, or for those who wish to show off their sharpshooting skills.

It is possible to temporarily neutralize humanz with melee attacks, as most will fall within two to three hits from any weapon. However, they will rise and attack again after a few seconds. To counter this, the player can drag the bodies to an open flame source to burn them, or in certain instances, send them off a cliff.

When walking around Central Park, the player might encounter them mostly in packs. In this case it is usually more efficient to simply run from them whenever possible, and to fight if there is no other way to get past them, such as if the player is inside a building or on the to reach an objective, such as a root of evil.

Trivia

  • There is a glitch that appears when fighting humanz with the spray bottle and lighter combination. After being hit by a burst of flame, more powerful humanz will retreat from the player. During this time they are invulnerable to damage and cannot be harmed, forcing the player to wait until they stop before hurting them again.
  • By killing 100 humanz of any type, the player will earn the "Eradication" trophy (PS3) or the achievement (XBox 360).
  • Humanz have the strange ability to leap well over fifty to sixty feet to land on a moving vehicle, even one that is traveling at top speed. As can be guessed, this can be very annoying during driving sequences.
